ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA - As the largest of the Leeward Islands, Antigua encompasses108 square miles. Surrounded by coral reefs, the coast is rugged with many sandy bay areas. Located just north of Antigua, Barbuda is a coral island emcompassing 62 square miles.

ACCOMODATIONS - The choice of island accommodations runs the gamut, from upscale and elegant to very affordable. Hotels, resorts and guesthouses are equipped with modern conveniences and many offer a full range of on-site facilities and amenities.

COMMUNICATIONS - Direct-dialing access is available to and from most countries around the world. Cellular phones are available for short- or long-term rental as are local calling cards.

CREDIT CARDS - Most hotels and some restaurants and stores accept major credit cards, although it's best to check beforehand. Travelers checks are accepted everywhere.

DRINKING WATER - The water is generally safe to drink; however, some visitors prefer bottled water, which is readily available.

ELECTRICITY - The electrical current is generally 220 or 110 volts AC, 60 Hz, in which case American-style two-pin plus are standard. Some hotels have outlets for 240 volts AC, in which case European-style two-pin plugs must be used. Visitors are advised to bring a plug adapter and transformer if they wish to use personal electronic items.

TIME - Antigua and Barbuda are on Atlantic time, which is one hour ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard time.

WHAT TO WEAR - Appropriate dress is casual and comfortable. Nudity on beaches and bathing suits on the street are unacceptable.
